It has been 15 years since the publication of Mark Francis’s book, Urban Open Space: Designing for the Needs of Users, and as society and industry have evolved, public space has become a central topic in the field of landscape architecture and urbanization as a field of global practice and research, along with sustainability, infrastructure and social justice. Urban open space is no longer considered an add-on to architecture, but an essential element of civic life, closely linked to the health and sustainable development of the city. However, a large number of urban open spaces are either ignored, or the user experience is ignored at the beginning of the design, resulting in many inconveniences, and cannot really be integrated into people’s daily life, and needs to be updated and transformed urgently.
Although in recent years, well-designed works recognized at home and abroad have been emerging in China, due to the lack of systematic case evaluation and analysis, especially the follow-up use evaluation research, these successful works often stay in exquisite pictures, which cannot better guide future practice, and it is difficult to lay a more solid theoretical foundation for the development of landscape architecture. As a summary of the results of the Landscape Architecture Foundation-funded case study method, the case study methods and frameworks summarized in this book have been widely used around the world to promote academic research in landscape architecture and have influenced the design, construction and management of many new projects. To this day, various professional organizations represented by the Landscape Architecture Foundation are still using the system summarized in this book to evaluate and study completed projects. Mr. Francis and the translators sincerely hope that this book will demonstrate the value of case studies in providing evidence-based criticism and theoretical development for the discipline of landscape architecture, and help the practice of landscape architecture in China.

In the global context of growing populations and urbanization, opportunities for the establishment of new bioprotected areas are increasingly limited. Therefore, it is essential to manage biodiversity in the built environment through conscious planning and design. Biodiversity Planning and Design: Sustainable Practices is a series of case studies that demonstrate and illustrate how biodiversity can be sustained in the face of urbanization and land-use change; how zoos can integrate biodiversity into communities by educating, motivating and influencing values; and how to rebuild or replicate biodiversity damaged by development through meticulous ecological research and innovative engineering practices. The case studies presented in this book are all from the United States and are selected to provide a broader perspective on biodiversity challenges at different scales and in land-use settings.
